The Austro-Italian-French War of 1859 (Second War for the Independence of Italy) was a war between France and Sardinia on the one hand and the Austrian Empire on the other. For Italy, this war was national liberation. France sought to expand its influence in Italy. Austria tried to prevent the unification of Italy and to retain dominance over Lombardy and Venice.
