One of the oldest military orders - the Teutonic Order was founded in the 12th century in Palestine. Due to the rapidly growing economic power, the Order was soon established a number of its divisions (the provincial commander) across Europe. When in the middle of the 13th century became apparent complete failure of the Crusaders in the Holy Land, the Teutons painlessly transferred its activities in eastern Europe. The Chapter of the Order is located in Marienburg, and the very state of the Order was the conductor of the German expansion, creating a serious threat to the integrity and independence of Poland, Lithuania and the western Russian principalities. Territorial and political conflicts have led to the creation in 1385 antiordenskoy coalition, and later - the war years 1409-1410. Which took place July 15, 1410 Order of the Battle of Grunwald was lost. In 1411 it signed a peace. In 1466 the Teutonic Order pleaded vassal of Poland.
Banner of the Teutonic Order - white with a black cross, in the 14th century was complemented by a golden Jerusalem Cross and the emblem of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.
