EK castings A89 - Roman centurion, 1st century AD
In the legion there were 59 centurions. The centurion's status was determined by the seniority of the centuria in the cohort and legion. The first cohort of the legion consisted of five double centurions, which were commanded by five senior centurions, who were called: Gastat 2nd, Principle 2, Gastat, principle and primipil. Primitive was the oldest centurion in the legion.

Centurion was easy to recognize by silver armor, often decorated with awards. In addition, he wore silver leggings that ordinary legionaries did not use. The crest on his helmet was unfolded across. Centurion wore a sword on his left side, and a dagger on the right, as opposed to ordinary legionaries.
Centurions were strict commanders and often used a club from a grapevine. Their job was to maintain discipline among the legionaries. It happened that they became victims of soldiers' revenge because of excessive cruelty and severity.
Centurions did not disdain to accept bribes from legionaries who wanted to evade their official duties. The bribes for giving leave were so widespread that even the emperor did not dare to put an end to it, fearing to provoke the discontent of the centurions. To save the soldiers from the expropriation, the emperors had to pay the centurions extra money to ensure the loyalty of the army.
